Roleplay

Server rules

Every rule has a number. Cite it when you report someone, and expect staff to cite it when they act.

The principle behind every rule

If your roleplay supports what you did, it stands. That includes violence, vehicle attacks and car ramming — but there must be a genuine in-character reason, and you will be asked to prove it if you are reported.

Record your point of view in any situation that is likely to be reported. Without footage, a reason you cannot show is treated as no reason at all.

Punishments shown under each rule are the standard for a first offence. Repeated or serious breaches are punished more heavily (1.7).

1

General principles

  1. 1.1
Roleplay justifies the action. Any action taken in the city — including violence, the use of a vehicle as a weapon and car ramming — is permitted where it follows from genuine roleplay and your character has an in-character reason for it. Actions without that reason are not.
  2. 1.2
The burden of proof is on you. If your actions are reported, you will be asked to demonstrate the in-character reason for them. A reason you cannot support with evidence will be treated as no reason at all.
  3. 1.3
Record your point of view. In any situation likely to be reported — conflict, robberies, pursuits, kidnappings and organisation activity — you are expected to be recording. Footage must be kept for at least seven days and provided when staff request it.
  4. 1.4
Staff decisions. Staff decisions take effect immediately. If you believe a decision was wrong, comply in game and appeal through the Complaints about staff board. Disputing a decision in game or in public channels is not permitted.
    PunishmentWarning – Jail 30 min
  5. 1.5
Knowledge of the rules. Every player is responsible for knowing these rules. Not having read them is not a defence.
  6. 1.6
Scope. These rules apply on the game server, the forums and the OppsRP Discord.
  7. 1.7
Punishments. The punishment shown in brackets after a rule is the standard for a first offence. Where a range is given, staff choose within it according to the circumstances. Repeated or serious breaches may be punished more heavily, up to a permanent ban, and staff may reduce a punishment where the circumstances justify it. A breach on the forums or Discord receives the equivalent forum or Discord sanction.
  8. 1.8
Warnings. Staff may issue a warning for a breach of these rules, and every jail sentence of 60 minutes or more, and every ban, also counts as a warning. Each warning stays active for 7 days from the day it was given. A player who reaches 3 active warnings is automatically banned from the game server for 7 days, after which their count starts again.
2

Accounts

  1. 2.1
One account per person. Each person may hold one account. Sharing an account, or playing on an account that belongs to someone else, will result in action against every account involved.
PunishmentBan 7 days on every account involved
  2. 2.2
Responsibility. You are responsible for all activity on your account. Do not share your login details with anyone.
  3. 2.3
Ban evasion. Using another account to evade a ban, mute or other punishment will result in a permanent ban of every account involved.
    PunishmentPermanent ban
  4. 2.4
Minimum age. Players must be 16 or older.
PunishmentBan until the player turns 16
3

Roleplay standards

  1. 3.1
In character and out of character. In-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC) information are strictly separate. Your character may act only on what they have learned in character.
    PunishmentWarning – Jail 30 min
  2. 3.2
Metagaming. Using OOC information in character — including Discord, livestreams, or information passed on outside the game — is prohibited.
    PunishmentJail 60 min – Ban 3 days
  3. 3.3
Powergaming. Powergaming is forcing an outcome on another player that they have no fair opportunity to respond to, or giving your character abilities, knowledge or resources they could not realistically have. It is prohibited.
    Powergaming includes:
    • Describing an action as though it has already succeeded, without giving the other player a chance to react — for example, announcing that you have taken their weapon or tied their hands.
    • Actions your character could not realistically perform, such as carrying another player while sprinting, or producing equipment your character does not have on them.
    • Using game mechanics to escape or control a situation in a way that could not happen in reality, such as climbing to an unreachable spot to avoid capture.
    • Refusing to accept a realistic outcome, such as continuing to fight after being clearly subdued.
    Powergaming is not:
    • Acting on something your character genuinely knows. If a player robbed your stash and your character knows it was them — because you saw it, found evidence, or were told in character — retaliating against them, including with a drive-by, is a roleplay reason and is not powergaming.
    • Surprising, outplaying or defeating another player in a conflict that is justified and realistic.
    • An outcome the other player simply does not like. Losing a situation does not make it powergaming.
The knowledge must be in character. If you only know who wronged you through out-of-character means — a stream, Discord, or a friend telling you outside the game — acting on it is metagaming (3.2). Be prepared to show how your character found out (1.2 and 1.3).
    PunishmentJail 60 min – Ban 3 days
  4. 3.4
Fail RP. Behaviour that is unrealistic for your character or the situation — ignoring serious injuries, disregarding a weapon pointed at you, or acting without regard for consequences — is prohibited.
    PunishmentJail 30–60 min
  5. 3.5
Value of life. Your character must value their life. When threatened with credible force, you are expected to respond as a real person would, which will usually mean complying.
    PunishmentJail 30–60 min
  6. 3.6
New Life Rule. A character who is killed and respawns does not remember the events leading to their death, and must not return to that situation or seek retaliation for it.
    PunishmentJail 60 min
  7. 3.7
Staying in character. Remain in character while in the city. Out-of-character disputes are resolved through the report process, not in game.
    PunishmentWarning – Jail 30 min
  8. 3.8
Sexual roleplay. Sexual roleplay of any kind is prohibited. This includes sexual acts, explicit descriptions and sexual advances pursued in character, whether or not the other player agrees to it. Any sexual content or conduct involving a minor, in or out of character, results in a permanent ban on the first offence and will be reported to the relevant authorities.
PunishmentBan 7 days – Permanent ban; permanent ban and a report to the authorities where a minor is involved
  9. 3.9
Other prohibited themes. Suicide, self-harm and sexual assault are not permitted as roleplay themes.
    PunishmentJail 60 min – Ban 3 days
4

Violence and conflict

Every rule in this section is read with 1.1 to 1.3: an action supported by roleplay is permitted, and you must be able to prove that it was.

  1. 4.1
Random Deathmatch (RDM). Attacking or killing another player without an in-character reason established through roleplay is prohibited. An attack is not RDM where roleplay has already established the conflict and the other party was, or reasonably should have been, aware of it.
    PunishmentJail 120 min – Ban 3 days
  2. 4.2
Vehicle Deathmatch (VDM). Using a vehicle to injure or kill another player is prohibited unless it is supported by an in-character reason, such as an active conflict in which that player is involved.
    PunishmentJail 120 min – Ban 3 days
  3. 4.3
Car ramming (CR). Deliberately ramming another vehicle is permitted only as part of a justified in-character situation, such as a pursuit or an established conflict. Ramming to start a situation, or without a reason, is prohibited.
    PunishmentJail 60 min
  4. 4.4
Initiation. Before using force, you must give the other party a clear demand and a reasonable opportunity to respond. This does not apply where roleplay has already established hostilities — where they are in an active conflict with you or your group, or have wronged your character in a way that would reasonably provoke retaliation, such as robbing your stash. In those cases an attack without warning, including a drive-by, is permitted, provided you can show the reason (1.2).
    PunishmentJail 60 min
  5. 4.5
Proportionality. Your response must be proportionate to its reason. A minor insult does not justify a killing.
    PunishmentJail 60 min
  6. 4.6
Combat logging. Disconnecting during or shortly after a situation to avoid its outcome is prohibited. The situation will be treated as though you lost it.
    PunishmentWarning
  7. 4.7
Spawn areas. Attacking a player at a hospital, at a garage, or immediately after they have connected is prohibited.
    PunishmentJail 120 min
5

Vehicles and driving

  1. 5.1
Realistic driving. Drive as though the vehicle and the consequences are real. Off-road driving is permitted only in vehicles capable of it.
    PunishmentWarning – Jail 30 min
  2. 5.2
Crash damage. A collision that would disable a vehicle in reality must be roleplayed as such.
    PunishmentJail 30 min
  3. 5.3
Restraint. A vehicle may not be used to escape a situation in which your character is physically restrained.
    PunishmentJail 30 min
6

Safe zones

  1. 6.1
Designated safe zones. Hospitals, police stations, garages, the DMV and spawn points are safe zones. Crime, violence and threats are prohibited within them.
    PunishmentJail 120 min
  2. 6.2
Escaping into a safe zone. Entering a safe zone does not end an active situation, and using one to escape is prohibited.
    PunishmentJail 60 min
  3. 6.3
Waiting outside. Waiting outside a safe zone for a specific player to leave, in order to target them, is treated as a breach of 6.1.
    PunishmentJail 120 min
7

Criminal activity

  1. 7.1
Robberies require roleplay. A robbery must involve genuine interaction. Demanding everything and leaving is not acceptable.
    PunishmentJail 60 min
  2. 7.2
Pocket-wiping. Taking everything a player is carrying is prohibited. Demands must be reasonable, and victims must be left with the means to continue playing.
PunishmentBan 3 days and removal of the proceeds
  3. 7.3
New players. Players who are evidently new to the city must not be targeted for robbery.
PunishmentJail 60 min and return of the items
  4. 7.4
Repeatedly robbing the same player. The same player may not be robbed more than once in 30 minutes, and a player must not be repeatedly targeted for robbery beyond that.
PunishmentBan 3 days and removal of the proceeds
  5. 7.5
Business cooldown. The same business may not be robbed more than once in one hour.
PunishmentJail 60 min and return of the items
  6. 7.6
Hostages. Hostage situations must be roleplayed genuinely by every party. Hostages may not be pre-arranged with their captors, and may not be executed without cause.
    PunishmentJail 60 min – Ban 1 day
  7. 7.7
Evading consequences. Starting a crime to escape an existing situation, such as a traffic stop, is prohibited.
    PunishmentJail 60 min
8

Organisations

  1. 8.1
Conflict requires a story. Conflict between organisations must have an in-character basis — territory, a failed deal, a prior incident — that can be supported under 1.2.
PunishmentJail 120 min – Ban 3 days for each member involved
  2. 8.2
Proportionate numbers. Bringing overwhelming numbers into a small situation is prohibited.
PunishmentJail 120 min for each member involved
  3. 8.3
Leadership accountability. Leaders are accountable for their members. Repeated breaches by an organisation may result in the removal of its leadership.
    PunishmentRemoval of leadership
  4. 8.4
State organisations. Members of the LSPD, SAHP, EMS, FIB and Government are held to a higher standard. Corruption roleplay requires prior approval from staff.
    PunishmentRemoval from the organisation
  5. 8.5
Equipment and access. Organisation equipment, vehicles and access may only be used for their intended purpose and, for state organisations, while on duty.
PunishmentWarning – Removal from the organisation
  6. 8.6
Leader positions. Leader positions are applied for on the forums and may be removed for inactivity.
9

Conduct

  1. 9.1
Toxicity and harassment. Out-of-character insults, harassment and toxic behaviour are prohibited. In-character conflict does not excuse out-of-character abuse.
    PunishmentWarning – Ban 3 days
  2. 9.2
Discrimination. Racism, homophobia, transphobia and other hate speech result in a permanent ban. There is no in-character defence.
    PunishmentPermanent ban
  3. 9.3
Personal information. Sharing another person's real name, address, workplace, photographs or accounts results in a permanent ban and may be reported to the relevant authorities.
    PunishmentPermanent ban
  4. 9.4
Real-world threats. Threatening anyone outside the game results in an immediate permanent ban.
    PunishmentPermanent ban
  5. 9.5
Advertising. Advertising other servers, communities or services is prohibited.
PunishmentBan 7 days – Permanent ban
  6. 9.6
Impersonation. Impersonating staff, or misrepresenting a staff decision, is prohibited.
    PunishmentBan 3 days
  7. 9.7
Voice communication. Soundboards, deliberately loud audio and music over the radio are prohibited.
    PunishmentWarning – Jail 30 min
10

Cheating and exploits

  1. 10.1
Third-party software. Any software or modification that provides an advantage — including mod menus, aim assistance, ESP and injectors — results in a permanent ban on every associated account.
PunishmentPermanent ban on every associated account
  2. 10.2
Exploits. Bugs must be reported through the Technical reports board. Knowingly using an exploit is treated as cheating.
PunishmentBan 7 days – Permanent ban, and removal of gains
  3. 10.3
Duplication. Duplicating items, money or vehicles is prohibited. Item movements are logged.
PunishmentPermanent ban and removal of gains
  4. 10.4
Automation. Macros and scripts that play the game on your behalf are prohibited.
PunishmentBan 3 days and removal of gains
  5. 10.5
Benefiting from abuse. Anything gained from another player's cheating or exploitation will be removed, whether or not you were aware of it.
    PunishmentRemoval of gains
11

Reports and evidence

  1. 11.1
Filing a report. Reports are made through the relevant board on the forums, using the form provided. Reports made in game or by private message will not be actioned.
  2. 11.2
Evidence standard. Footage must be unedited, must include the lead-up to the incident, and must be viewable by staff. Clips that omit the start of a situation may be rejected.
  3. 11.3
Responding to a report. If you are reported, you may be asked for your own footage. If it is not provided within the time given, the report will be decided on the evidence available.
  4. 11.4
False reports. Filing a report in bad faith, or submitting altered evidence, is a breach of these rules.
    PunishmentBan 3 days
  5. 11.5
Open reports. Do not discuss an open report in game, or approach the other party about it.
    PunishmentWarning – Jail 60 min
12

Purchases

  1. 12.1
No pay to win. Nothing purchased with real money provides an advantage in roleplay.
  2. 12.2
Real-money trading. Selling in-game money, items, vehicles, property or accounts for real money is prohibited, and results in action against both parties.
    PunishmentPermanent ban for both parties
  3. 12.3
No real-world value. In-game currency and items have no real-world value and cannot be exchanged for money.
  4. 12.4
Compensation. Requests for compensation are made through a Technical report with supporting evidence. Requests without evidence will not be considered.
